5 Ways to feel better about visiting the Dentist

Friday, November 22, 2019

Do you get nervous about visiting the dentist? This is a common fear that affects many adults, and can impact your dental health if this drives you to avoid your regular check-ups.
Dental anxiety can stem from a range of reasons, including bad past experiences, fear of pain, fear of powerlessness, worries about a bad diagnosis or result and even financial concerns.

We understand heading to the Dentist can be tricky for a lot of people, so we’ve put together 5 tips on how to feel better about booking in your next check-up.

1. Share your fears

Being upfront and honest is often the best way to address any fears, and we have a strict no judgement policy! We often have patients telling us they are worried or anxious before a check-up, and this allows us to take the time to talk through everything prior to beginning treatment. Being able to discuss what’s going to happen during the visit, and addressing any concerns and questions prior to treatment is a great way to feel more relaxed during your visit to the dentist.

2. Agree on hand signals
Fear of powerlessness is a very common reason for avoiding a dental visit. If you discuss this with your Dentist prior to treatment, you can agree on a hand signal which will mean your Dentist will stop treatment when you indicate you need a break. This way you are in control of your dental visit, and can feel comfortable knowing you can pause at any time.

3. Get to know your Dentist
We love taking a personal approach with each of our clients, and this can help when it comes to a fear of going to the Dentist. We’re proud to be part of a friendly team, all the way from our reception staff to our dental technicians, each member of our team will be friendly, welcoming and put you at ease as soon as you arrive. Feel free to ask you Dentist any questions on the day, and get to know them a little better to build trust for future visits.

4. Book appointments at low-stress times
When booking your visit, think about what you have on before and after the session. If you are more likely to be rushed during a particular time or day, avoid booking a dental appointment then. You might find going on a day off, or on a weekend works best as you won’t have any outside factors adding to your stress levels.

5. Visit the Dentist regularly
Ironically, one of the best ways to avoid the dentist is to keep up a good dental routine including bi-yearly check-ups. Having healthy teeth means your dentist won’t need to see you as frequently. Keeping to your bi-yearly check-ups also allows you to develop a rapport with your Dentist, making each visit a little easier as you’ll know the process and the staff.

Dental anxiety is nothing to be ashamed of, and we deal with this very frequently. We’ll make you feel at ease during your dental visit and are here to help every step of the way.
